State Forest Hiking!

When we were en route, I was curious to see if this would turn out to be the same place friends and I used to go hiking when we were in high school. I wasn't sure at first because I had never entered through the park gates, but once on the trails everything was very familiar. I then realized that I had been parking on a back road and accessing a State Forest illegally all those times! Whoopsie! [I included this picture for the National Geologic Trail sign. (These are for you, Aubrey!)].

Hiking is my favorite thing to do ever. This day just so happened to be the day after our Laura Ingalls trip, so this amounted to the best weekend ever for me.

I fully endorse little boys wearing pink scarves on their heads.

From the lookout.

Here too, another direction.

On the way back down. We all made it safely as a result of much care and caution!

There were, however, some trails that had to be forsaken in the name of prudence. (This was another diversion from the hiking times of my youth.) You know, things are just a little different now with the children and everything (but it was tough on me, let me tell you!).

As promised, our day included a little fishing. There was a separate part of the State Forest with a river that served us well. Little Wideawake promptly caught a baby bass, which caused much excitement, but it had to be returned to the water (to his dismay). It worked out really well save for the mosquitoes that chased us out of there.

And with that (and about 50 mosquitoe bites apiece) we began the trip home.
Oh, and rather than packing a picnic we at supper at a seasonal hamburger/ice cream place (Dairy Way) that Lance and I used to frequent on our trips back and forth from where we lived at the time and "home." It was great. Not in keeping with my healthy food code, but great. And reminicient of those early marriage days. Add that to driving some of the same old highways from those trips and it was a really sweet trip down memory lane.
