Kitchen Tips

Tonight while cooking supper and simultaneously trying to keep a baby happy in his highchair I had an inspiration. I was preparing broccoli for steaming and happened to think that if I peeled and trimed the thick stem part it would make a nice-sized, healthy, cold chew toy/snack for the baby to gnaw on. It worked great; he loved it! (Carrots work nicely, too.)

Along those same lines, I love saving big bucks by never buying baby food. I just blend whatever vegetable we're having for supper in my little food mill and add a little water to thin if necessary. Usually I try to make enough at once for a few servings.

(Sorry if these are nothing new to you!! I'm just pleased with stuff like this--- please share your great ideas with me! Does anyone have a good, natural recipe for homemade teething biscuits?)

NOT babyfood related: I've been enjoying making recipes from the Artisan Bread in 5 Minutes a Day books (one is a healthy version), but recently I ran out of cornmeal for under the loaves while rising. It was on the grocery list, but none made it home from the store. So, my substitute that I invented is those fine bread crumbs I had in the cupboard. It works!

  1. If you put pureed veggies on ice cube trays you can freeze them and then defrost one or two in the microwave when you need them. I did this with both my kids, took one afternoon a week to puree up a few different fruits and veggies and freeze them in trays. It works great and really cut down on the amount of jarred food I had to buy.
